Frequently Asked Burlesque Questions:

Q – How can I become a burlesque performer/become involved with burlesque shows?
A – There are lots of way to become involved. First and foremost the best way to become involved is to be an active audience member. An aspiring musician constantly exposes themself to music, and an aspiring burlesque performer, similarly should expose themself to burlesque. If you have an interest in crew positions, such as doors, kitten (our fancy term for stagehands), stage managing, etc., approach the show organizers.

Q – Do I need to have any formal dancer/theater training to be a burlesque perfomer?
A – No formal training is needed to become a burlesque dancer, however, classes are highly recommended to help you get a good understanding of the skills, ettiquette, and experience you would need to become a successful burlesque dancer.

Q – Do I have to get naked to perform burlesque?
A – No. Everyone has different levels of comfort, but, generally, the minimum clothing a burlesque dancer strips down to is pasties (nipple covers) and panties. Especially if you have an extra skillset (singing, hula hoop), you can manuever a routine to focus on the tease rather than the nudity itself.

Q – What are pasties?
A – Pasties a small pieces of fabric worn by burlesque dancers on their breasts to cover the aereola and the nipple. Typically, pasties are adorned with sequins, rhinestones, lace, and whatever else the performer fancies, and they come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Many of them may have tassels for twirling.

Q – How do you attach pasties?
A – Pasties are attached with different types of adhesives depending on the wearer’s preferences. These adhesives can include: spirit gum, liquid latex, eye lash glue, and double-sided dress tape. There are pros and cons to each, so it’s best that you try which ones are best for you in advance of wearing them for the first time. It is also recommended that you do a patch test on the inside of your wrist when trying new adhesives to check for possible allergies to adhesives. (To test, dab a little on the inside of your wrist and see how the skin reacts over the next 30 minutes, then wash off. If there is any irritation, discontinue use of product).

Q – Where can I buy pasties? Boas? Gloves?
A – You can get store-bought pasties at most sex shops (Seduction, Stag Shop), pre-done handmade pasties through “Cheex-Mirage” by Tanya Cheex & Aiva Mirage, or learn to make them yourself in group or private classes.

Q – Do you make good money as a burlesque dancer? Can I be a full time burlesque dancer?
A – The short answer is no. The long answer is that it is not impossible but it takes extreme dedication, and is best supplemented by or with another source of income.

Q – What’s the difference between a burlesque dancer and a strip club dancer?
A – Sometimes the line can be very thin. There are many similarities and many differences, in fact burlesque is essentially what stripping was 40+ years ago. The most basic difference is that strip club dancers are licenced to work in adult entertainement venues and go fully nude, wheras burlesque dancers are contracted on a show-to-show basis, are not licenced, perform at ticketed events at venues accessible to the public and do not show genitalia and/or bare breasts during their performance.

Q – Is it possible to be too old / too big / too uncoordinated to be a burlesque dancer?
A – One of the great things about burlesque is that it is open to people of all ages (19 and above), races, shapes, sizes, socio-economic backgrounds, and skill levels are welcome to join in the fun! There are no limits in burlesque, all you need is a little bit of imagination and a willingness to try something different.
